    • Hallo Freunde,

    als ich dieses Tehma las, da kam mir ein von mir geschriebener Artikel für die englichse Zeitschrift "On The Bell" in den Sinn, den ich leider nicht einkopieren kann. (.PDF)

    Geschreiben 1989, hat aber nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren..
    Als ich ihn mir noch eimal durchlas, da war ich erschrocken ob der Aktualität-

    Man vergebe es mir, wenn ich ihn zu so später Stunde nicht re-übersetze:

    Firefighting - a life-threatening hobby

    Volunteers are idealist working selflessly for the benefit 9of their community.

    In Germany most fire protection is provided by such individuals, individuals, who are willig to offer their time and experise for the greater good.

    Communities of 100.000 or less run normally such Vol Fire Brigades alongside professional firefighters in the greater cities.

    In fact historically, Geman cities have preferred this system to that of "Retained Fire Fighter" and the volunteers are probably Germany's oldest citizen-led movement.

    However, as with every thing else, change is upon us, and many voluteers are no longer recieving the assistance they need from the rest of the community.

    Significant numbers of them have even had to reliquish their calling because bosses are refusing to be flexible about absence due to a fire incident or other emergencies.

    This is actualliy illegal but what can you do if the boss simply tells you the the firm cannot afford any missing employees?

    Or tells you off the record, I 'am thinking of a reorganisation of the firm and I'm afraid I'll have to let someone got?

    All volunteer firefighter are insured by the Fire Brigade Association but this insurance pays out only on current basic income, not on future earning potential.

    The drawback to this system are made manifest in the following case

    On September 24th 1989 in Bavaria a warehouse collapsed as firefighter were attempting to contain a blaze.
    A 31 year old firefighter was trapped in the burning rubble.

    Although he was freed by collegues he later lost a leg because of the injuries he sustained.
    He also suffered irreversible paralysis in one of his hands.

    Just month ealier this man had launched his own carpentry business having untertaken significant loans.

    His income was also very low as the business was not fully established.
    He lost everything

    Of course the insurance paid for his treatment but his retirement packeage was based on his self-employed earnings.

    He received 1400.-DM (1989, wohlgemerkt!) approximatelly 560 Britisch Pounds/month, plus a lump of 2800.-DM.

    This joint figure did not even cover his mortgate nor the debts incurrend in the purchase or workshop utilities.
    In this case such an approach was out of the question as the blaze was not caused by arson.

    Yet, if a similar accident had taken place in America the injured would have received 180.000.-DM- a significant difference.

    Some administrators do not realise what a resource these volunteers are.

    In fact, many volunteers even have to pay the 800.-DM for their turnout kits out of their own pockets.

    They are under pressure from all sides.

    Whether this pressure comes from demanding bosses or from family commitments is immaterial.

    It really is no surprise that the recruitment is becoming harder.

    It's a sign of the times that everyone is willing to accept the assistance of the volunteer firefighter but few are prepared to pay the necesary price.

    If such an attitude pesist society will be the loser because one day the alarm will sound and no-one will come-
